What it does

The feature,
explained clearly

Practice Mode is the open ear training space inside Earonman. Ten different drill modes in one place: four foundational modules (Intervals, Chords, Scales, Jazz Voicings) available to everyone with a free foundation library, plus six advanced quest modes unlocked with PRO. No levels and no daily cooldown, and nothing you get wrong costs you anything - you pick what to train and how long. Correct answers still earn XP and keep your streak.

01

Four free foundation modules

Intervals, Chords, Scales, and Jazz Voicings - the fundamentals of relative pitch and harmony, free with no daily cooldown. Covers intervals up to the octave, triads and 7th chords, major scale modes, and basic jazz voicings.

02

Six advanced PRO quest modes

Slashmaster for slash chords, Functioneer for harmonic functions, Harmonic Quest for harmonic movements (Barry Harris style), Guido for guide tones over jazz progressions, Hybrid Lab for triad-over-bass voicings, and Polychordist for stacked triads (polychords).

03

No daily limit

The gamified Exercises have a 3-per-8-hour cooldown on Free. Practice Mode does not - on either free or PRO modules. Drill 5 exercises or 500, whenever you want.

04

Rewards effort, punishes nothing

Every correct answer earns XP and keeps your daily streak alive, so the reps count for something. But wrong answers cost nothing, and practice XP stays out of the weekly leagues and the leaderboard - the pressure-free space to actually push your limits.

05

Custom filtering inside every mode

Pick exactly which intervals, which chord qualities, which modes, which voicings, or which slash patterns to train. Narrow down to one specific weakness and drill it.

06

Real piano sound across all modes

Every Practice Mode exercise uses the same Petrof III grand recordings as the rest of the app. Whichever module you drill, you train on professional grand piano timbre.

How it works

Three steps.
Repeated until it sticks.

Three taps from opening Practice Mode to your first exercise.

01

Pick one of ten modes

Choose any of the four free modes (Intervals, Chords, Scales, Jazz Voicings) or, on PRO, any of the six quest modes (Slashmaster, Functioneer, Harmonic Quest, Guido, Hybrid Lab, Polychordist).

02

Filter what you train

Set up the session - narrow to specific intervals, specific chord qualities, specific modes, or specific voicing families. Restrict to one inversion or include them all.

03

Drill until you are sharp

Random exercises pulled from your chosen content. Answer as many as you want. Step away whenever. Your stats record everything for later review.

What you will learn

Skills you walk away with

Practice Mode is a tool for building relative pitch and harmonic recognition. The skills you build here transfer directly to transcribing, improvising, composing, and playing music by ear.

Reliable interval recognition

Train any interval combination from simple seconds to compound thirteenths. Build the instant recall that transcription demands.

Full chord vocabulary

Every triad quality, every seventh chord type, every inversion. The kind of vocabulary that lets you call out chord changes by ear on the bandstand.

Modal and scale recognition

Hear the colour of each church mode - Dorian, Mixolydian, Phrygian, Lydian. With PRO, hear the same way the melodic minor and harmonic minor mode families work, plus bebop and symmetric scales.

Jazz voicing identification

Hear Closed Position, Shell Voicings, and Left Hand Voicings in the free module. With PRO, drill the full library - Drop 2, Drop 3, So What, quartal stacks, Shearing block chords.

Advanced harmonic devices (PRO)

With PRO, the six quest modes drill slash chords, harmonic functions, harmonic movements (Barry Harris style), guide tones over jazz progressions, hybrid voicings, and stacked triads (polychords). The advanced jazz vocabulary, gamified.

Targeted weak-spot drilling

Stats from your gamified exercises tell you where you are weak. Practice Mode lets you drill exactly that, unlimited, without burning curriculum cooldown.

Why use it regularly

Daily reps.
Compound results.

Practice Mode is the closest analogue to the way professional musicians actually maintain their ears - daily, focused, targeted, with no scoring pressure. Treat it as the gym for your ears.

Targeted drilling beats random reps

Random practice is fine for beginners. Once you know your weak spots, targeted drilling produces results 3-5x faster than open-ended sessions.

The pressure-free space matters

When a score or a streak is on the line, your brain plays it safe and reaches for the easy answer. Practice Mode keeps the rewards but removes the risk - nothing you do here can be lost, so you can actually push your limits.

A real free foundation

Earonman gives an actual usable Free tier - intervals up to the octave, triads and 7th chords, major scale modes, and basic jazz voicings - without a daily cooldown in Practice Mode. Enough to develop reliable relative pitch before deciding whether to upgrade.

Maintenance is a separate skill from learning

Once you have learned a chord type or interval, you have to maintain it. Practice Mode is the maintenance gym - low pressure, infinite reps.

Who is this for

Not just jazz musicians

Practice Mode is for any musician who wants better ears, regardless of style or experience level. Especially valuable for these groups.

Working jazz pianists

Free voicings before a gig, plus PRO quest modes (Slashmaster, Hybrid Lab, Polychordist) for the advanced comping vocabulary working pros actually use.

Composers and arrangers

Build the internal sound library that lets you hear an arrangement before you write it. Hear which extension or substitution will land.

Producers and beatmakers

Identify chord progressions in samples and reference tracks. Train your ears to hear when a layer is in the wrong key or fights the harmony.

Classical musicians

Sightsinging, intonation, transcription, sight reading. The same skills conservatoire exams demand, on a free unlimited platform.

Self-taught musicians

Close the blind spots most self-taught players have around tritones, sevenths, and inversions. Free unlimited reps until it sticks.

Hobbyists who never plan to subscribe

Earonman is genuinely useful on the Free plan. Practice Mode alone is enough to take an absolute beginner to recognising 7th chord qualities, free forever.

Why Earonman

What makes this
different

Ten modes, one place

Four free foundation modes plus six advanced PRO quest modes. The full ear training vocabulary, drillable on demand, with consistent UX across all of it.

Genuinely free foundation

The four free modules cover the fundamentals - intervals up to the octave, triads and 7th chords, major scale modes, and basic jazz voicings. Enough vocabulary to take a beginner to confident relative pitch, forever free.

PRO unlocks the advanced library

Slashmaster, Functioneer, Harmonic Quest, Guido, Hybrid Lab, Polychordist. Six quest modes that drill slash chords, harmonic functions, harmonic movements (Barry Harris style), guide tones, hybrid voicings, and stacked triads. The advanced jazz vocabulary professional pianists use.

Built by a professional jazz pianist

Created by Tomas Jochmann, a professional jazz pianist and Barry Harris protege. The filter options and quest modes reflect what a professional musician actually needs to drill.

The structured progression from basic intervals to complex jazz harmonies is brilliant. This is a game-changer for any serious musician.

Frequently asked

Your questions,
answered

How many modes does Practice Mode have?
Ten modes total. Four foundation modules available to everyone: Intervals, Chords, Scales, and Jazz Voicings. Six PRO quest modes: Slashmaster (slash chords), Functioneer (harmonic functions), Harmonic Quest (harmonic movements, Barry Harris style), Guido (guide tones over jazz progressions), Hybrid Lab (triad-over-bass voicings), and Polychordist (stacked triads / polychords).
What does the free Practice Mode include?
The four foundation modules cover the fundamentals - intervals up to the octave, triads and 7th chords, major scale modes, and basic jazz voicings (Closed Position, Shell, Left Hand). Free, with no daily cooldown and no card required. The full library (compound intervals, modal triads, extended chords, melodic and harmonic minor modes, symmetric and bebop scales, advanced voicings like Drop 2, Drop 3, So What, quartal, Shearing block) unlocks with PRO.
What do the six PRO quest modes drill?
Each quest mode trains a specific advanced harmonic skill. Slashmaster drills slash chord recognition. Functioneer drills functional analysis - what each chord is doing in the key. Harmonic Quest drills harmonic movements in the Barry Harris tradition. Guido drills guide tones over real jazz progressions. Hybrid Lab drills triad-over-bass hybrid voicings. Polychordist drills polychords - two triads stacked on top of each other.
Why is the foundation free if PRO is paid?
A few reasons. First, ear training is a long-term commitment - a usable Free foundation lets any serious musician build relative pitch without paying anything. Second, PRO is what funds active development: Earonman is not a one-time release - new features, levels, and quest modes ship regularly. Third, social features (weekly Leagues, leaderboards, full history) plus servers, audio infrastructure, and hosting all have ongoing costs. And finally, there is a psychological angle: musicians who pay for training tend to use it more seriously. PRO is for people who want more and want to invest in their progress.
Does Practice Mode count toward my streak?
Yes. Any answered exercise (curriculum or practice) keeps your daily streak alive. Practice Mode is the easiest way to keep a streak on a busy day - no cooldown to wait for.
Can I drill a single specific chord type?
Yes. Filter Practice Mode to just minor 7 chords, just basic Drop 2 voicings on major 7, just Dorian scales, or any other narrow slice. With PRO, the slice can be much more specific - altered dominant chords, quartal voicings, polychord stacks, etc.
