What it does

The feature,
explained clearly

Exercises is the structured, gamified path through Earonman. Every level introduces one specific skill, drills it until it sticks, then unlocks the next. You can see your whole journey on a visual level map. Compared with the open Practice Mode, Exercises adds structure: XP per correct answer, streaks for daily consistency, badges for milestones, and a clear sense of progression.

01

200+ levels in one continuous curriculum

A single level map takes you from basic intervals through triads, 7th chords, modes, jazz voicings, extended harmony, slash chords, and functional harmony - section by section, in the order that builds reliably on what came before.

02

Real grand piano sound

Every exercise plays back on a Petrof III grand recorded at Baracca Records. You train on the same timbre you hear on professional recordings.

03

XP, streaks, and badges

Correct answers earn XP. Practising every day fills your streak. Hitting milestones (10 levels, full section complete, first PRO level) unlocks badges. The dopamine loop that keeps you coming back.

04

Lessons paired with each level

Before each new level you get a short chat-style lesson with Dr. Earmond Sharp that explains the theory. Skip if you already know it.

05

Notation on the web + MIDI keyboard

On the web, exercises display notation alongside the audio - the sound-to-symbol link, always visible. Connect a MIDI keyboard for Harmonic Quest and Guido to play your answers directly on the keys, with click-track play-along.

06

Daily limit on Free, unlimited on PRO

Free users get 3 exercises per 8-hour rolling window. PRO removes the cooldown entirely. Practice Mode is unlimited for everyone regardless of plan.

How it works

Three steps.
Repeated until it sticks.

A level is roughly 8-12 exercises focused on one specific skill, plus a paired lesson if you want the theory first.

01

Pick a level on the map

The level map shows the entire curriculum. Free levels are open immediately. PRO levels show what is inside before you commit.

02

Read the lesson (optional)

A short chat-style lesson with Dr. Earmond Sharp covers the theory for the level. Skip if you already know it, or read it for fresh framing.

03

Answer the exercises

Hear the interval, chord, scale, or voicing. Tap your answer on screen. Get instant feedback. Earn XP, fill your streak, possibly unlock a badge.

What you will learn

Skills you walk away with

Earonman exercises develop relative pitch - the ability to hear musical relationships regardless of key. This is the practical ear skill professional musicians use every day, distinct from the rare absolute pitch.

Recognise intervals on the spot

From a minor second through compound thirteenths. The foundation of every other ear skill.

Hear chord qualities instantly

Major, minor, diminished, augmented triads. All five seventh chord types. Inversions, modal triads, extensions, alterations.

Identify scales and modes by colour

Major, minor, all seven church modes, melodic and harmonic minor modes, bebop and symmetric scales.

Voice jazz chords like a pianist

Shell voicings, Drop 2, Drop 3, So What, quartal stacks, Shearing block chords. The complete jazz voicing vocabulary.

Analyse harmonic function on the fly

Slash chords, polychords, upper structure triads, secondary dominants, modal interchange. The advanced harmonic devices in jazz standards, Broadway tunes, modern pop, and film scoring.

Build a daily ear training habit

Streaks, badges, and a visible level map make the habit stick. Most users see meaningful improvement within 2-4 weeks of daily 10-minute sessions.

Why use it regularly

Daily reps.
Compound results.

Ear training is a muscle. Without regular use, it shrinks. Compared with reading theory or watching tutorials, daily ear drills produce results because the brain needs repeated, spaced exposure to reliably tag a sound with a name. Even 10 minutes a day beats one 90-minute weekend session.

Daily reps build instant recall

When you transcribe, improvise, or write, you do not have time to think. You need the answer in under a second. Daily reps train that instant recall.

Streaks make the habit automatic

Most musicians say they want to do ear training but never start. A visible streak counter and 3-exercise daily target make the habit frictionless.

You hear things you used to miss

After a few weeks of daily exercises, you start noticing intervals and chord colours in songs on the radio that you would have completely missed before.

Compound effect over months

Three months of 10 minutes a day puts most musicians ahead of where they were after years of casual playing without targeted ear training.

Who is this for

Not just jazz musicians

Ear training is not just for jazz musicians. Every musician who wants to transcribe, improvise, compose, produce, or play by ear benefits from reliable relative pitch.

Jazz musicians

Transcribe solos, recognise chord changes in real time, identify upper structures and substitutions.

Composers and songwriters

Write what you hear in your head without fumbling at the piano. Develop intuition for which interval or chord will land.

Producers and beatmakers

Identify chord progressions in samples, hear when a layer is in the wrong key, design hooks that resolve where you want.

Classical musicians

Sightsinging, intonation, transcription. The same ear skills score reading and conservatoire entrance exams demand.

Band and choir leaders

Hear which singer is flat, transcribe a tune by ear for charts, communicate harmonic ideas without notation.

Self-taught musicians

Most self-taught players have blind spots around tritones, sevenths, and extensions. Structured exercises close those gaps fast.

Why Earonman

What makes this
different

Built by a professional jazz pianist

Created by Tomas Jochmann, a professional jazz pianist and Barry Harris protege. The curriculum reflects how musicians actually develop their ears in the real world.

No gaps in the curriculum

Each level introduces material that connects to the next. You will not be ambushed by a chord type you have not been taught.

Free tier is substantial

Basic intervals, basic triads, major and minor scales, the full Jazz Voicings section. Plus unlimited Practice Mode across 4 modules. Not a 5-minute trial.

Cross-platform sync

Train on web at home, on iPhone on the train, on Android anywhere. Your XP, streaks, badges, and stats follow you everywhere.

Earonman completely transformed the way I approach ear training. It makes learning fun, and its clear, comprehensive lessons have really helped me grow my musical vocabulary.

Frequently asked

Your questions,
answered

How is Exercises different from Practice Mode?
Exercises is the gamified curriculum - linear levels, XP, streaks, badges, paired lessons. Practice Mode is open drilling - you pick the content, no scoring pressure, no cooldown. Most users do a few daily Exercises to make progress, plus Practice Mode for targeted weak-spot work.
Do I need PRO to use Exercises?
No. The Free plan includes basic intervals, basic triads, major and minor scales, and the full Jazz Voicings section. PRO unlocks the rest of the curriculum (modes, extended harmony, functional harmony, advanced quest modes) and removes the 3-exercises-per-8-hour limit.
What is the daily limit on Free?
3 exercises per 8-hour rolling window. So you can train 9 gamified exercises in a day if you space them out. Practice Mode has no limit on Free, so you can drill any topic unlimited even without PRO.
How long until I see results?
Most musicians notice improvement within 2-3 weeks of daily 10-minute sessions. Reliable interval and basic chord recognition typically lands within 1-2 months. Advanced jazz voicings and functional analysis are a multi-month or multi-year project depending on how deep you go.
Do I need to know music theory first?
No. The early levels assume zero theory. Each level is paired with a short lesson that introduces the relevant concept before you have to apply it.
